I'M

Roy D. Bernard.

Responsibility. Engagement. Pride

B

My name is Roy D. Bernard, but you can just call me Bernard. I was born in New York, raised in Haiti, and did my education in Virginia Beach. I am a senior majoring in Finance with a concentration in Real Estate and a minor in Business Management at Old Dominion University. I found my love for Finance after my sophomore in college after reflecting on my family's lack of knowledge of such a crucial field. I have always wanted to be in real estate after watching Million Dollar Listings growing up. I chose my minor of business management to make sure I am a well-rounded individual when it comes to managing people and understanding the ends and outs of a business.

My time at ODU has been great and very rewarding. I have balanced multiple jobs while maintaining Deans List. I have worked on group projects like The Urban Plan Project, I have gained insight on software like Costar, and done a summer internship with GEICO. These are just a few of the many things I have done at ODU. You can learn about more by continuing to view my e-portfolio.

PROFESSIONAL Experiences

ODUrent

ODUrent is the main off-campus housing provider for ODU students. This company rents home that are walking distance from ODU and provides on-campus benefits with off-campus freedom. I get first hand experience as a property shower of the steps a tenant goes through before living with ODUrent. I show property to possible tenants all day long and on my downtime I am helping follow-up with possible tenants, assist current tenants with concerns, and help the lease signer prepare for their next tenants group.

Student Engagement and Enrollment Services (SEES), Programming Assistant

The Vice President's division of SEES aims at engaging, teaching, and retaining students at ODU. I am the programing assistant for this the division and report directly to the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students. I work on maintaining student lead initiatives like Finish in 4, Monarchs Rising Up, ODUnited, and REP ODU. I coordinate programs built around these initiatives that will foster students success. I also organize special events, luncheon, meeting, dinners, for up to 300 professionals. The task and experiences I have encountered in this position has helped me develop my professionalism, written and oral communication, along with time-management and organizational skills.

Housing and Residence Life, Resident Assistant

ODU HRL is the on-campus provider for ODU students and houses around 4,700 students across 11 different communities.I have been with ODU HRL for three years now and have worked in first year communities, one being a Living-Learning Community, and upperclassman apartments.  As a resident assistant in any community I am the first point of contact for 25-50 students depending on the community. I build community amongst my floor and my community by engaging the residents in intentional programs. I ensure that residents are adhering to all university policies and procedures by educating them on changes and updates.

GEICO, Business Management Development Summer Intern

GEICO is one of the fast growing auto insurance companies in the nation and is the second largest insurance company. My internship at GEICO was very hands on and allowed me to collaborate with teams to propose solutions to challenges in the areas of recruiting, efficiency, and retention. I analyzed trends, surveys, and saving analysis via internal and external data. I was certified in Yellow Belt in Lean Six Sigma by GEICO officials.
